What is the shielded pool?

A shielded pool is the part of the ZEC supply protected by zero-knowledge proofs: addresses, amounts, and the transaction graph inside the pool are encrypted. Only each pool's total balance is public. Zcash has had five: Sprout, Sapling, Orchard (now sealed), and Ironwood, plus the transparent pool outside them. Right now 4.35M ZEC (25.8% of supply) is shielded.
